The Nutcracker Princesses - by Khethiwe Masango and Tswelopele Molope

On the 15th of October 2016 a few of our Senior Prep girls took part in the Nutcracker Ballet performance at the State Theatre. They are a part of the Liezel Marais Dance Academy and had to be the dancing Chinese Princesses as the Nutcracker story goes. They were very excited to be a part of the stage performance and did two shows in one day!

Public speaking evening by Isabella Afonso

On the 17th of October a few of the grade 6 and 7 public speakers participated in the unprepared public speaking evening at DSG. We were welcomed and divided into our respective grades. We were then given 4 topics to choose from as well as 15 minutes to prepare. Once the time was up we then moved to different classes to present our speeches. Everyone was given a chance to present their speech while they were evaluated by a judge, who would mark them according to a rubric. After everyone had presented their eloquent speeches, we were given feed back from the judge. Each participant was given their rubric and a certificate from DSG. This was a great experience for all our public speakers, especially those new to public speaking!

PCS First Girls' Soccer Team - by Mmampou Mabokano

After watching all the boys play soccer, teacher Stacy agreed to gather a bunch of girls for a girls' soccer team. The girls practiced and practiced and then the coach picked ten of the best players from the team to go to the soccer tournament. The girls were very excited and all made it to the game. They played their games and waited to see what place they came in, which was a third place. Everybody was so happy!! They went back to the school and felt proud of how well they have played.

The fear of being yourself - by Lindo Nkoane

Sometimes you fear of what people are going to say about the real you. People try to mold you into this person, you don’t even know who you are anymore and who you have become as a person. You have this fear that if you show people the real you, they are going to turn their backs on you. You will feel the fear of being alone, you’re too scared of the truth, but the truth is not something impractical and hopelessly distant from us. Sometimes being alone gives you the time to think of what kind of a person you have changed into and what kind of person you want to be. To make your dreams a reality, not someone else’s, be your own person. Don’t follow someone’s path, but make your own path. Don’t copy a legacy when you can make your own. Be unique!  Be yourself.

The International Youth Ambassadors - by Moira Dahlan

We, PCS, were fortunate enough to have the international Youth Ambassadors of Taiwan come do a performance for us. All the pupils were very excited to see what was in store for them. The assembly started off with Mr. Gelling thanking them for coming, and then the fun started!

Two quirky hosts came out and got the crowd so wild! The first act were 4 people - 2 girls and 2 boys, and they did a cool dance routine, then there was a girl who could balance an umbrella on her foot which was so impressive and after that, there was a guy who could pop a balloon by kicking it and one of the pupils had to do that too!

After that he asked for 10 children to come up on the stage and told them to lie on the floor. All of a sudden he jumped over all of them. We were so surprised and shocked when after all of those performances they all came together and did a fun finale where we were able to join in! Over all we had an awesome time in this assembly!

Le Trec horse-riding competition - by Tiffany Schäfer

On the 17th of September 2016 I - Tiffany Schäfer - participated in a Le Trec horse-riding competition at my horse-riding school Silva Pegasus Stables, which was for fun so we didn't win any rosettes.

I rode on a stubborn horse named Roxy. The horse riders and their horses had to go through obstacles. The first obstacle was that we had to go over plans of wood, which some horses are scared of, then we had to go up and down a hill but we had to try not to break our gait because then we lose points. Gait is the speed at which the horse is going, walking, trotting or cantering. After that we had to open a gate without dropping the chain or meeting the poles fall onto the ground which I found a bit difficult, we then had to walk through poles placed on the ground in an 'S' shape without stepping on or over the poles. Then we had to go through poles in a zig-zag pattern going around poles, when we were done with that we had to do a narrow jump and then go to the backing poles where you try to back your horse away once you walk between two jumps and stop them. Then we did the cantering poles where you canter been two poles on the ground, then we did the bounce where we jump over 4 jumps straight after each other.

We then went into a zig-zag path made by jumps. Horses can be scared of anything so, the next obstacle was quite difficult for some of the riders because we had to walk over a long piece of material and then go under a thing to get to the grass arena, where the next obstacle was. This obstacle was going up and down a 'tabletop' which is a piece of grass on the hill which was like a jump trying not to break our gait again. Then when we came down we had to get off our horses and walk them around and get back on onto the side we weren't used to and then we were finished. After our horse-riding instructors told us our score, we left the arena.

It was really fun even though my horse was a bit stubborn, him and I did really well and we were in the top 10. I really hope my horse-riding school has another competition like this again!
