The Toastmasters- by Moira Dahlan photography by Tiffany Schafer

The first evening of the toastmasters’ speech course went extremely well. All students attending the course were very nervous at first but once they got comfortable in their environment, the ship sailed smoothly. The people directing the evening along with Mrs Holmwood made it a fun and interactive session filled with enthusiasm for all the students. A speech from one of the directors caught everyone by surprise, the title of the speech was “The Eyes Have It”.  The evening’s activity consisted of building your confidence, projection of your voice and finally the different types of speeches. It was a great learning experience and it was only the first session. I, for one, am very excited for the next evening and I’m sure all my fellow toastmasters are too!

Thakane Masia: - Riddles

1. A man lives on the tenth floor of a building. Every day he takes the elevator to go down to the ground floor to go to work or to go shopping. When he returns he takes the elevator to the seventh floor and walks up the stairs to reach his apartment on the tenth floor. He hates walking so why does he do it?

2. I run but I cannot walk, I sometimes sing but never talk, I lack arms but I have hands, I lack a head but I have a face. What am I?

3. In a one-story pink house there is a:
- pink cat
- pink stove
- pink bed
- pink sink
- pink window
- and even a pink person.
So what colour are the stairs.

Answers
1.     He can't reach the tenth floor button on the elevator.
2.     A clock

3.     There aren't any stairs, because it's a one-story house.

Interview with Mrs Holmwood and student (Refilwe Mashiane) about their thoughts on Toastmasters by Isabella Afonso

Mrs Holmwood:

Q - Do you think toastmasters will benefit students who participate?
A - "Yes, definitely! Students learn how to communicate effectively and they grow in confidence."
Q - What new skills can students learn from toastmasters?
A - "They will learn how to deliver a speech in front of an audience. They learn to speak with purpose, clarity and eloquence."
Q - Would taking part in this course possibly improve the student's English marks?
A - "It will definitely help them in their oral assessment, as the skills are the same."

Student (Refilwe Mashiane):

Q - Do you think that toastmasters will help you improve your speech making skills?
A - "Yes, because when I need to do a formal speech I will remember the course I did in toastmasters."
Q - Have you enjoyed the lessons you've attended so far?
A - "Yes, because it is nice introducing yourself every evening and gaining confidence."
Q - Would you recommend the toastmasters course to the grade sevens of 2017?
A - "Yes, because it will help them with their confidence and speech preparing skills."

Interhouse Swimming Gala- by Jordanne McDonald

The Pretoria Chinese School’s interhouse swimming gala was held on Friday, January 22, 2016 – a cloudy day that turned into a day of fun in the sun. The Tigers sadly was the only house that dressed up for the event and showed off their festive dress as Hawaiian Hoola Dancers. At the end of the day the Lions all ended up being painted blue!

At last the swimming began and the pool area was a beehive of activity! Everyone was in good spirits and supported their teams at the top of their voices. Big and small were in the pool giving it their best – some with more success than others but the enthusiasm was never lacking. The Dragons were victorious in the gala with the Lions a close second, and the Tigers third, but everyone had fun.

The race of the teachers against the students was loudly encouraged and supported, and although the teachers won the race, the students put up a good fight. Coach Nicky then had a race against one of the high school boys known as Henry “The Fish”, and only narrowly lost.

The annual interhouse gala at PCS was, as always, well supported by pupils, teachers and parents alike and everyone had a lot of fun. We are all looking forward to the event next year!
